Freesylin' - Kanye West and Mos Def
Kanye and Mos Def at The Blue Note Ft. Robert Glasper Experiment by cisconyc
Kanye West and Mos Def were surprise guest at the Robert Glasper Experiment show at the Blue Note in NY on Saturday. The crowd sounds hype for almost every line West spits. I don't think Kanye is the best freestyler, but he goes pretty hard in his own way. And Mos Def is his usual awesome self.

Live and In Color - Jessie Boykins III
I loved being presently surprised. A couple of my friends and I decided to go out on Friday, thinking we were going to see Bilal. When we get there, the surprisingly friendly staff at The Park informed us he was not coming. We realized that we misread the eblast about the event that night. Since we had braved the bastardly cold wind, we decided to stay. Good thing we did because Jessi Boykins III put on a good show. He was engaged, entertaining, and energetic(didn't mean for the aliteration). His backing band really made the show; each instrument shined and came together as a solid whole. I liked the performance and music so much I did a rare thing these days; I purchased one of his physical cds their on the spot.

The White House Celebrates Black History Month With Motown Tribute
On Thursday, several artists, including John Legend and Nick Jonas, had the honor of performing the music from the iconic Motown record label along side Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. The tribute was recorded, but wont air on PBS until later this year; sort of defeating the point of it being a Black History Month celebration. Go over to NME to read more.

BBD Potentially Starts a Trend On Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon
Bell Biv DeVoe sort of reunited to perform "Poison" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Once again proving that Jimmy Fallon's show has become the go to show for artist new or classic to capture audiences. Everyone loved it so much, Questlove has petitioned his twitter followers to petition Late Night to bring more old school R&B artist to the show. Potentially, this could be a whole week of similar artist like Guy and ABC. All I know is whoever does the artist booking deserves a raise. Watch the web exclusive encore performance after the jump.

Album Preview: Marsha Ambrosius "Late Nights & Early Mornings"
Listening Session for Marsha Ambrosius' "Late Nights & Early Mornings" Album - Washington, DC: February 21, 2011 from Mary Nichols (DJ Fusion) on Vimeo.
I'm still a little bitter about this, but Marsha Ambrosius previewed her new album 'Late Nights & Early Mornings' at U Street Music Hall in DC on Monday night. I am bitter because I didn't know she was going to be there until that night, and I was too tired from coming back from a trip to go. But it's okay, because someone was kind enough to post video of it.

New-ish Discovery - Alex Winston
Alex Winston is another up and coming female singer who is getting attention for her unique voice and musicality. The Detroit native would fit perfectly on a bill with Florence & the Machine or Jack Penate. I might catch her when she comes to town next month. Download her song "Locomotive" here.

XXL Freshman Class: Yelawolf
Yelawolf, aka Catfish Billy, mixes southern rock and rap to spit in a unique voice. And luckily being signed by the best white rapper and one of the best rappers period, Eminem, hasn't made people focus on his race. He is not my favorite up and coming rapper, but I can see why he is getting a lot of buzz. Especially amongst those who like artists like UGK and Three Six Mafia. Hopefully, he won't go the way of Bubba Sparks. Watch him in his home town below.
Labels:
XXL Freshman Class,

XXL Freshman Class: Lil Twist
The Young Money signed artist is another one of these barely teenagers trying to takeover. Honestly, I think he needs a little work; Bow Wow was better than him when he was only 7. Considering Bow Wow's current status that doesn't mean that much I guess. I will give this one a little time to make my final judgment, but if he and his voice don't grow up he will be a lost cause. I would have replaced him with Tyler The Creator on the list, but hey what do I know.
Labels:

XXL Freshman Class: Diggy Simmons
I had watched a few videos of Diggy Simmons rapping before his cypher on the same BET awards as CyHi Da Prince, but it wasn't until that show that I realized just how talented Simmons is. The barely teenager, shamed his older brother, Jojo, and some of the other established artists. These kids nowadays are wasting now time showing what they got, and how hard they are willing to work to get to the top. Watch out twenty somethings, the talent is only getting younger. Diggy comes in at the 1:47 mark.
Labels:
Diggy Simmons,
XXL Freshman Class
XXL Freshman Class: CyHi Da Prynce
CyHi Da Prynce caught my attention when he was part of the cypher, above, on the BET Awards a while back. He held his on against Kanye West and Common. Further solidifying his place as one of the most likely to succeed up and comers, Kanye showcased CyHi's talent on his latest album and G.O.O.D Friday releases. If you don't know CyHi yet, get familiar.

Diddy Drops A Last Train To Paris Mixtape
LoveLove Vs HateLove, is apparently about the two options of how one can feel about love. "You can either hate love or love love." The mixtape is just as good as the album; not horrible, not extraordinary, with some solid tracks. Actually, as a whole, I think I like the mixtape better, except I don't like the mixtape version of "Shades." But once again, if someone else was singing I would probably like it more; Diddy's voice just annoys me. Download the mixtape for free here.

Local Flavor - Carolyn Malachi
DC native and multi-threat, Carolyn Malachi was nominated for a 2011 Grammy in the Best Urban Alternative Performance for her single "Orion;" which I love. She blends spoken word, R&B, jazz, and a bit of pop to create that eyes half open, head nodding music that many crave but few attempt to produce nowadays. With jazz in her blood, her great grandfather

THE SHOES "STAY THE SAME"
Uploaded by theshoesmusik. - See the latest featured music videos.
Endorsed by Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn, The Shoes are a duo of French djs that have been gathering some of their international friends to make their debut album 'Crack My Bones' as close to perfect as possible. Their stuff, including their videos reminds me of Fatboy Slim or The Chemical Brothers in his prime. Not that they necessarily sound a like, more that their is this dynamic nature to their music. That the music is the star, not the people. Something I wish artists like Lady GaGa and Nicki Minaj would take note of.

This Grammy nominated Canadian band mixes some of the most random genres together to make some unexpectedly great music. That is if you like country, folk, gospel, Irish music, and samba mixed together. Admittedly, I don't love all their stuff because country folk isn't my favorite genre, but I do like the more soulful songs. I like their newer stuff, the songs after they got a new singer. Flight Facilities - Crave You ft. Giselle (Version 2) by flightfacilities
There is little known about the djs that make up Flight Facilities. Even their country of origin is not locked down; some sites say Sidney and others say Trinidad and Tobago. It's possible that they are from Trinidad and Tobago originally and are currently in Australia. That doesn't really matter though, they make great music and that's what counts. Their song "Crave" featuring Giselle Rosselli has been burning up in Australia, and catching attention from music lovers around the globe.

Phantogram TV Debut
Phantogram made their television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last week. Kudos to whoever picks the musical acts for the show, they have really been doing a great job. And not just with indie stuff. But demerits for Fallon for not knowing who Tinie Tempah is. Phantogram's video for "Mouthful of Diamonds" is above.

It's Colorful At the Top
Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj's highly anticipated debut album, finally reached #1 on the Hot 200 billboard chart. This is after eleven weeks on the chart, and the album being certified platinum already. Yet another accomplishment for raps reigning queen. Other notable entries, Red's "Until We Have Faces" debuting at #2, and out and proud Ricky Martin's "Musica + Altima + Sexo" debuting at #3. That is higher, much higher than I would have expected.

Concert Review: Chromeo
MNDR
*Didn't get there in time to see The Suzan. She was pretty entertaining; similar one man band style to Diamond Rings from the Robyn concert. I think I might like her better as a dj though. When I was watching her I got a Lady GaGa before she was famous vibe, so maybe she will make some adjustments and take over the world.
Chromeo
Chromeo-ooooooo! My favorite French-Jewish-Canadian was visibly pleased by how the crowd chanted their name; standard for a Chromeo concert. After a good amount of chanting, the duo, with help from three Robert Palmer styled break ground singers, proceeded to rock the house. 95% of the crowd danced non-stop the whole time; many people in the balcony didn't appear to come to dance. One couple in front of somehow found room to do spins, dips, and other moves that require more room than my friend and I had. It was great. They played all my favorites; "Bonafide Lovin'," "Tenderoni," and "Fancy Footwork." And culminated the night with glitter and confetti before their encore; the canons were still up or replaced from the Girl Talk show earlier in the week. All and all I danced more and had a better time then when I saw them at the Virgin Mobile Festival in September. Which means a lot cause I had an excellent time at V-Fest.

Concert Review: Robyn
First things first, the LGBT, especially the G, was in full attendance at the concert. I loved it; made a couple of friends. But one person who's picture was featured in BYT's article about the show, was way too wasted and almost got chin checked by the people he kept falling on. You can hear him singing slurring badly in the videos.
Everything before Robyn is barely worth mentioning. After a very trying and adventure filled afternoon, we got to Ramshead Live a bit late, so we missed all of Natalie Kills except for two songs. I'm not really a fan, but from what I heard I don't think I will be. I will give her stuff a full listen before I make my final judgment.
I was further disappointed by the second opening act, only because I thought it was supposed to be Marina and the Diamonds. Instead, a tall, blonde, very pretty young lad in gold lamé leggings and a bird like mask came on the stage. I found out later that his name is Diamond Rings, so I guess that's how I made the mistake. He was pretty good and has loads of potential, but 95% of the crowd was in agreement that we didn't care; we just wanted Robyn to come out.

Mixtape Allstar - Rockie Fresh
Rockie Fresh - "What's The Hurry" Official Video from RockieTV on Vimeo.
When Patrick Stump gives out music suggestions, I listen to them. A week or so ago he endorsed Rockie Fresh and Actual Proof. Admittedly I was a bit surprised at the choices; both being hip-hop mixtapes. I know, Stump doesn't only work with rock and indie artists, but still. I downloaded both mixtapes, Fresh's here, and was happy I did so. The young Chicago native's mixtape is on that Drake, J. Cole level, but without as much hype, yet. The mixtape has some interesting collaborators, features, and samples; Phil Ade, Naledge, Imogen Heap, Mike Golden and Mr. Hudson. But even without those Fresh excels; his lyrics arrogant and experienced, beats hot but not overstated, and a varied song selection. Get yourself familiar.

9:30 Club: The Documentary
Long before I was born, the world famous 930 club was a haven for punk rockers. This was also back when it was on F street, not V street like it is now. I really can't imagine it being anywhere else. Anywho, two of the original 930 Club's patrons, Tarik Dahir and Jeff Gaul, decided to make a documentary about the DC institution. They will be screening their documentary, "930 F Street", at the Shaw Library on Wednesday. If I didn't have plans I would definitely go to this. If you can, I strongly urge you to go and take in a piece of history.

Double Dose of Wale
Wale is seriously on his "no days off" grind. He released two videos, for "The Break Up" and "The MC," from his mixtape More About Nothing. Filmed on the historic Howard University campus, Wale adopts the theme from (500)Days of Summer for "The Break Up" video. Quite well I might add.

Talib Kweli Is A Mac
Talib Kweli @ Apple North Michigan Ave, Chicago from erick delarosa on Vimeo.
Talib Kweli performed a free show in an Apple Store in Chicago last Friday. He performed tracks off his first completely independent album, "Gutter Rainbows." Clearly his fans love him; cheering when he flubs a verse. He takes that as an opportunity to tell his fans that they shouldn't blindly love him; they should let him know when they aren't feeling it. Basically tell them to treat the performance as if they were at the Apollo.

Black Gold...
...Texas tea(yes, I made a Beverly Hillbillies reference). This two man band,Eric Ronnick and Than Luu make up the band, but they have other members for when they are touring, has seen a lot of success in their short existence. If you watch So You Think You Can Dance?, you might recognize their song "Shine" as the farewell song from the last season. And it was featured in Valentine's Day. They have toured with Panic! At the Disco, Ambulance LTD, Rachel Yamagata, and others. Listen/watch more of their stuff here.

New-ish Discovery - Mr. J. Medeiros
I am a bit late to the Mr. J. train, but I think I can catch it. When first checking out his music, I wasn't that impressed to be honest. Until I watched his video for "Constance." I miss this type of conscious music; mainly my fault for not really looking for it. It reminds me of the songs in the 90's that had actual meaning, like Tupac's "Brenda's Got A Baby," TLC's "Waterfall," and others I can't seem to remember titles to. The subjects and the music won't having you bouncing on the dance floor, but they will get you to think and hopefully feel. From what I have listened to so far, Mr. J. has a good range of sounds to keep me interested. Above is his new song "These Hands," and his video for "Constance" is after the jump. If you are not yet familiar with him, head over to his site to listen, watch(he vlogs), and download here.

Wale Wants To Make Maybach Music
Wale announced that he has signed with Maybach Music Group. This comes to no surprise after the DC emcee frequently tweeted about being in the studio with Maybach Music Group founder Rick Ross. Before any rumors could start he let it be known that, "the music won't change...the energy will. And ROCNATION still handles the business." So Wale will make the music he wants, Ross tha Boss will oversee it, and Jay Z will take most of the money(not in a dishonest way of course).

Foreign Friday: M-Flo
If you haven't looked into Japanese hip hop and pop you should start. There is something so similar yet unique about the music scene in Japan. Some of the best American producers, Timbaland for example, work with a lot of Japanese artists. One of the first Japanese artist I was introduced to was M-flo. They are one of the biggest hip hop acts in the country, and have collaborated with other big names like BoA. Originally, the group was made up of producer DJ Taku Takahashi, Verbal, and Lisa. But Lisa eventually left the group for a solo career. The remaining members are also a part of the Teriyaki Boyz, who have worked with Kanye West, Daft Punk, and Pharell. Jack Penate Might "Be The One"
Clearly I was asleep for the past two years, I can't believe I didn't know about Jack Penate's latest album Everything Is New. I like it more then Matinee; apparently the critics feel the same way. "Pull My Heart Away," video above, shows how Penate's sound has grown. Matinee was him having fun and trying things out, while Everything Is New sounds like he focused on a particular sound or theme. And that was a smart choice. The video for "Be The One," his second single, is after the jump.

Patrick Stump Can't Sing?
In his latest youtube video, Patrick Stump does a medley of Michael Jackson hits; with less awkward facial expressions and dance moves than I like.
