"Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince stopped by London’s famed Maida Vale Studios yesterday for an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and performance, in which the duo wore the reggae influences of their new single “Satellite” even more on their sleeve by debuting a medley of Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me (No No No)” and Joe Higgs’ “Steppin’ Razor” (made famous by Peter Tosh). The Kills’ swampy-stomp take is excellent, as it ably abides by my #1 rule for great covers: Make the jam(s) your own. Stream the entire broadcast here or just the reggae medley above."~twentyfourbit.com

photo from @mattheartspade
DJ and blogger, aheartisaspade.com, Matt Gross(I hope he doesn't mind that I used his twitter picture) was kind enough to answer a few of my questions.
1) When you started your website did you have a vision or plan for what you wanted it to be? If so, have you stuck to it?
2) Do your personal music taste align with the majority of what you post? What type of music do you prefer?
3)How did you get into DJing?

Cover Wars - Kenton Dunson Remixes John Legend's "Rolling In The Deep"
John Legend - Rolling In The Deep Feat. Kenton Dunson (Kenton Dunson Remix) by kentondunson
What is that saying: A copy of a copy is never as good as the original? In this case, it's more like a copy of a copy is something completely different from the original. I love that this sounds like an actual remix. To me adding a rap verse isn't a remix, it's just another version of the song. Dunson does a good job making this sound even more like it could be a track on a John Legend album.

Album Release - The Sounds 'Something To Die For'
If you like Alphabeat you will probably like The Sounds. The Swedish band, of course, has been releasing music for over a decade and they are still going strong. They have made fans out of everyone from Pharell to Quentin Tarantino. On their new album, Something To Die For, they continue their indie new wave rock sound. Lead singer, Maja Ivarsson, voice gets drowned out on some songs, but her delicate sounding voice shines on tracks like "Wish You Were Here." You can listen to the new album here.

Album Review - Mac Miller 'On and On and Beyond'

XXL Freshman Class member Mac Miller's debut album, On and On and Beyond, comes out this week. I don't really have much to say about it; I expected much better. Overall the whole album sounds like a lazy 90's summer playlist; non-thought provoking subject matter, chill beats, and a young feel. Like it would be on the soundtrack to "The Wackness," a good movie by the way. Stand out tracks: On and On and In the Air . You can listen to his debut here.

Album Review - Sky Ferreira "As If"
As If! EP: A-
I love Miley Cyrus, but Sky Ferreira is who she wishes she could be. Ferriera is a teenager who is making the music she wants without really having to worry about being a role model. She sings about not being ashamed of loving sex on her Katy Perry like opening track "Sex Rules." I'm not naive or a prude, but when I found out her age I did wince a little bit. Being only 17, I'm sure some religious parent organization is already boycotting her in some way. Despite that, her debut As If! EP is electronic pop goodness, especially for someone so young. Read a track by track review after the jump. And listen to the whole EP here.

Local Flavor: Tereu Tereu
The DMV natives are another up and coming band to keep your eye out for. Sounding like a mix of Phoenix and Young The Giant, especially on songs like "Furwinked," Tereu Tereu makes good pop-punk indie music. So good they landed a gig opening up for D.C's much revered The Dismemberment Plan when they played their reunion show at the Black Cat. And they are currently on tour with fellow DMVer Carol Bui, which had them playing shows at SXSW.

"Covering Joy Division‘s classic “She’s Lost Control” (also covered by Jamaican born Afrofuturist predecessor Grace Jones shortly after its release), Spoek applies the Sankofa principle by learning from the teachings of the past to go forward to get across his idea of a scary not too distant future. 2011 Best Alternative - Kokayi
In addition to winning Best Alternative, he also won a Living Legend award at the 2011 DMV awards. He reminds me of a mix between B.O.B and Cee-Lo; which works for him. On top of being a critically acclaimed, Grammy nominated artist Kokayi "keeps busy on multiple fronts with several side-projects – as one half of the electro-hop duo, Dastardly (with DJ/Producer Sharkey), and his long-time Afropunk outfit, The Caesarz - each of which has self-released albums to much critical acclaim. He's produced the MTV Jams staple, "Jet Setter" for fellow D.C. artist Tabi Bonney and created the theme to BET’s “How I’m Living”, as well as music for various commercials on MTV/Nickelodeon." Lupe Fiasco Debuts At #1
Lupe Fiasco's fiasco of an album, "Lasers," debuted at #1 on the billboard Hot 200 this week. I say it's a fiasco only because of the drama surrounding it. Despite Fiasco bad mouthing the record and many fans disappointment with it, the album still beat out several new releases and Adele for the top spot. Another Glee soundtrack, Avril Lavigne, R.E.M, and Sara Evans all debuted in the top 10; #3, #4, #5, and #6 respectively. A somewhat disappointing entry for Avril Lavigne, but better than not being in the top ten at all.

Foreign Friday - Does It Offend You, Yeah?
"Spend an hour in the company of Does It Offend You, Yeah? and a couple of dozen pints and you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of a brilliantly bilious torrent of hatred and disgust aimed at the mass music media, major record labels, sell-out ‘underground’ acts...You’ll find yourself, essentially, in the company of the most uncompromising, un-corporate-cock-swallowing, angry, passionate and dedicated-to-the-cause band in the UK right now. And one who knows the pitfalls of having a gorge-like gob: “Everyone who has a strong opinion gets shot down for it. But we’re fighting the good fight.”The passionate Brits just released their new album, Don't Say We Didn't Warn You. I loved their last album, so I had high hopes for this one. It sounds a little different then I expected, but I think I love it more for that. It has edgy electronic punk tracks, 80's like dance tracks, a little bit of pop, and a lot of Brit heart. Whatever it is in the UK that makes people make great music should be bottled and sold. You can listen to the whole album here for a limited time.

Album Review - Jennifer Hudson "I Remember Me"
Instead of a long post about the album, I'm going to summarize my feelings about this album as such: LSNE = Lots of sizzle not enough spark, Broadway = Someone will be belting this out despite whether they can sing or not, Cut It Out = The album could have done without this, Heavy Rotation = Will be playing this on repeat, and Meh = Song left me feeling nothing.
Heavy Rotation = "Angel," "Don't Look Down," "I Got This"
LSNE = "No One Gonna Love You," "I Remember Me," "Still Here"
Broadway = "Why Is It So Hard," "Believe"
Cut It Out = "Everybody Needs Love," "Feeling Good"(Had to play the Buble version to get this out of my ears)
Meh = "Where You At," "Gone"
C+/B- A lot of the tracks could go in the meh category actually. She clearly wasn't trying to make an album for the masses, and I commend her for that. You can listen to full album here.

Typhoon - The Honest Truth from Matthew Ross on Vimeo.
This band with more members than Arcade Fire, will probably have the same effect as them at the Grammys one year."It took less than the space of that first track to fall in love. This command of dramatic range and the breadth of the instruments involved is a hallmark of Typhoon’s sound. The band began simply as a recording project between Kyle Morton, Devin Gallagher working one track at time on an album Kyle had been writing during his first year of college. Many of their friends were drawn into the project, including Toby Tanabe, Tyler Ferrin, Jordan Bagnall, Leah Ng, Dave Hall, Eric Stipe, Conlan Murphy, Paige Morton and more."Their new EP, "A New Kind of House," was released this week; you can listen to it here. The Rivalry That Never Was
When lists are made of the cities with the best music scene, D.C. rarely makes that list. That doesn’t mean there isn’t great music being made, played, and jammed to in the nation’s capitol. The DMV does make it onto the lists of cities with great music venues; especially for indie music. And the shining star of the local music scene is undoubtedly the nationally revered 9:30 Club. Boasting an impressive schedule of buzzed about up and coming acts and already established hit makers, the 9:30 Club tends to be the go to place for a live music fix.
But the 9:30 Club is not the only relatively small music venue in the DMV. Not too far away is the Black Cat. Geared more towards alternative rock, the Black Cat hosts less mainstream acts than the 9:30 Club. However, on occasion the venues have hosted the same artists months apart. When my friends and I noticed this, we couldn’t help but think about the two clubs battling for artists, audiences, revenue, and therefore being rivals. In a debate like Coke vs. Pepsi, Flinstones vs. Jetsons, Beatles vs. Rolling Stones, a 9:30 Club vs. Black Cat debate probably won’t net much fervor.

New Music - Adebisi Shank
I am not an instrumental person 90% of the time, but when it's good it's great.
"The record label / management company describes the trio as a blend of Fang Island’s shredding riffs with Battles’ electronic quirkiness and rhythmic playfulness. That description isn’t off the mark, but readers won’t get a sense of the band’s real abilities until they hear its hyper-melodic, polyrhythmic, and — most importantly — jubilant songs in full."The Irish band will be playing three SXSW shows this year; from the 17th to the 19th. Should Willow Smith Be Worried?
...I don't think so. Questlove posted the video on his twitter with the title "ladies & gents: music's future." Looks like the future of music is pretty bleak. I'm actually a bit worried about the motives behind some of the pint sized, maybe soon to be stars. Hmm, none of them seem to have half the talent of the Disney channel kids; which doesn't mean they won't make it. Lil Nay Nay seems to have the most potential out of them all, and since she wants a Disney Channel show she might actually get one.

Jessie J's SNL and US TV Debut
According to her twitter, she is the first person to perform on SNL without an album out. I thought someone else had done that, but I'll take her word for it. She knocked it out the park as per usual. The powerhouse Brit must have made new American fans from this, if not I don't know how she is going to do it. Watch her performance of "Price Tag" above, and "Mama Knows Best" here. Hopefully she will announce a US Tour soon.

2011Best MD Female R&B - Paula Campbell
Paula Campbell, a Baltimore native has had much success. Her single "How Does It Feel" was a big hit on local radio, “The women want to talk to Paula because she writes music they identify with." She supported acts like Bone Crusher and Kanye West, worked with Neyo(video for the song above), and has even charted on billboard. Her independent album Who's Got Next? was very well received, but after signing with Sony they haven't released her follow up. XXL Freshman Class: Lil B
Lil B is another skinny, tatted up youngster trying to make it in the game. He released his first studio album, "Angels Exodus," in January 2011. The Guardian UK had this to say about it and the rapper:
"His debut album...transcended familiar notions of good and bad, being one of the most peculiar rap albums ever pressed: a beatless, Beat poetry-style set where Lil B, voice a-quiver with earnestness, ponders love, beauty and all the bad things in the world over naïf new-age synth washes. Lil B is far from the first rapper to toy with persona, but this slippery nature makes him an unknown quantity: will he remain a cult figure, or can he take “Based” style into the mainstream? "His newly released "Base For Your Face," featuring Jean Grae and Phonte, is already getting a lot of buzz around the net. You can listen to it here.

Impressions by amere meander
The unsigned Austrian singer/songwriter is also a part of the band Amere Meander; their song "Impressions" is above. She has one of those voices that you are not quite sure if she can sing. Like, maybe she needs a few lessons, but the music she makes doesn't require the best voice anyway. Her solo work reminds me of Lykke Li. I like "From The Stars" and "Go Skyward," I think those are her best songs. She has potential, but she might need to work out a few kinks first. You can listen to her solo stuff here.

Q&A With Aaron Thompson
Aaron Thompson - A Record, A Wheel from goldenbear on Vimeo.
Local indie folk artist Aaron Thompson, sounds like a mix of David Gray and Bob Dylan. With a voice made for folk, raspy enough to be cool but not so raspy that he is inaudible, Thompson paints a hauntingly beautiful picture of a life of substance. A life with ups and downs, passion, and love. His self-titled debut album could easily be the soundtrack to an indie movie; perhaps Garden State 2(I really hope they don't make that). The eventual Grammy winner was kind enough to answer a few of my questions.
1)When writing music, do you have a specific process you follow? or any rituals?
Usually I start with the melody. If it comes when I'm not around an instrument, I'll hum it until I can't forget it or record it on my phone. Later on I write the instrument parts, usually with a guitar and then the words follow. If I sit down with it and nothing comes for a few minutes, i move on to the next song. There's a big book of songs waiting to be finished, so there's always something to work on.

"Late Nights & Early Mornings" Pay Off
Adele's sophomore album, 21, is #1 for another week on the Hot 200. But the more impressive news is that Marsha Ambrosius's first solo album, "Late Nights & Early Mornings," debuted at #2 on the chart, and #1 on the R&B albums chart. She truly deserves it; it is a great album and she has been promoting non stop for what seems like years now.
