Who Is This Guy?

courtesy of talkinblues.com

I finally got to go back to New York last week; I haven't been there in about a year.  Despite the cold, it was such a good time.  The best part was seeing Citizen Cope at Brooklyn Bowl.  We've seen him at the 930 club before, and apparently he remembered us cause he smiled and waved at us.  Yes, we did do some internal geeking out, he is a cutey.
After Cope got off, he introduced Gary Clarke Jr., and I was pretty much the only person who could remember his name.  I think everyone is going to eventually remember his name because he is a Hendrix-esque guitar player.  I was fixated on his fingers the whole time; mainly cause I'm learning the guitar now.  I'm normally not into instrumental most of the time, but this was great. When he did sing, the mic wasn't very loud, but I could tell he had a pretty good, power to the people, 70's voice. Hailing from Texas, Clarke's music is a fusion of many genres, but mostly southern rock, blues, and RnB.

As a venue, the Bowl is an interesting concept.  The bowling alley is right next to the performance area; it is two steps down from the lanes.  Which surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, didn't disturb the sound of the music.  It was a little awkward being at the front of the stage while everyone else was about twenty feet back. I guess DC music club behavior is different from NY.  People did fill in after the horrible opening act got off, and Citizen Cope came on.   It was unfortunate that most people left when Questlove started dj-ing. But it was understandable because his set didn't include today's top 40; it was mostly old school stuff. The best part of his set was watching the footage of old Soul Train episodes, and old commercials. Hi-larious!
